In late 2020, I discovered the then up-and-coming Youtuber known as James Schaffer from Schaffrillas Productions. He was creating a few ranking videos like “Every Best Animated Feature Winner Ranked,” “Every Disney Renaissance Movie Ranked,” and “Every Dreamworks (Animation) Movie Ranked.”

I was wondering if he would do the other eras of Disney Animation Studios. I was in a now defunct Discord server he hosted and he admitted that he doesn’t have that much nostalgia for the previous eras. So I took it as, “he’s not going to rank every other pre-Renaissance movie.” For a while, anyways. So I figured if he’s not going to rank those movies, then maybe I will.

I had a poll on Twitter by the end of the year just to see which topic would get the most interest. Out of the three choices, they are Every Movie from Disney’s Golden Age (Snow White to Jungle Book), Disney’s Dark Age (Aristocats to Oliver & Company), and every short from the Package Film era ranked. There were only three votes and they’re all for the first choice. Which is fair to start from the beginning of the Studios’ filmography. Especially when I haven’t watched every movie from that era.

So I wrote the intro first and then I started watching the movies on March to April of 2021. As I was watching the movies I wrote them in an essay format and in chronological order. Once I completed that draft, I then moved all the movie sections in ranking order and wrote the ending speech. There were some rewatches here and there and some of them did end up changing my placements here and there, but never to the extreme.

I was almost set on starting on video editing and even made a test clip for how I wanted to start the Fantasia segment. Which is unlisted, but I’ll post a link to the video below. I also made a thumbnail and a possible endslate card.

However, then 2022 came and it ended up being one of the most stressful years of my life. For starters, my HDD I had since 2018 was starting to die. Which not only had my main location for a bunch of projects including the visual assets for the ranking video, but also my old projects I had saved since 2005. So many memories and to this day, I have not yet recovered the files.

Luckily, I was doing the whole script on Google Docs and I was doing another version of the draft with better grammar and in a script format. But then the #DisneyDoBetter and #WhereIsChapek campaign happened and I realized that it wouldn’t look good if I made a video praising Disney during protests about how they mistreat workers. Actually, I think even before that there was massive protests in Hollywood and I was a bit leary about supporting them. But the fight against Hollywood raged on continuing with the SAG Union strikes of 2023. It was at that point that I decided to cancel the project.

If I can be honest, I’m not comfortable with starting up this project back up. it’s been a few years and I’ve been a completely different person since then. The strikes may have passed, but my hatred for the Hollywood industry and those involved in it have persisted. To the point where I refuse to watch any current mainstream movie on any mainstream theater or streaming service. Even just pirating the movie online would still give them attention, which is not what mainstream crap deserves. The only real exception was The Day The Earth Blew Up, the Looney Tunes movie in 2025. But that’s something I was a champion of, simply because it was a hand drawn animated movie that got released to theaters. If Fixed got a theatrical release, I would’ve watched that too.

The other exceptions would be DVDs and Blu-Rays, some of which I already owned before the boycott, some were from second hand stores, and others I bought from Warner Archive. Despite the name, it’s basically its own company that can release whatever it wants from Warner Bros, no matter how old or obscure. However, it’s currently released titles that were advertised like crazy and made a billion dollars that I don’t trust. I’ve had this boycott before the 2020s, namely against the Disney live action remakes, sequels, and any other live action movie that had a reputation. But right now, I flat out don’t love movies anymore. I tried to find the perfect time to sit down and watch them all the way through, but I could never. Dinnertime is always random in my parents’ house.

Even then, I just don’t find sitting down and doing nothing while watching things passively for a few hours appealing anymore. Throughout the years, I’ve been playing more video games and that’s because I have a bit more control on how I want to play them and how much I want to experience them. With roguelikes being more of a thing, I get a fun sense of randomness that you don’t even get from classic arcade games. Making for an even more replayable experience. Obviously, you aren’t going to get that sense of interactivity or replayability with movies and shows. You could try, but it’d probably be a disaster.

Ironically, around the time I was making my Disney Ranking video, I was burnt out on playing video games.

I have mostly loosened up with shows, but I don’t want to watch them for any project or review. Plus, I have the habit of skipping the episodes or scenes I don’t like. So it’s casual watching at best. There are also books, literature and graphic, that I want to read. But only to get away from looking at the screen for hours. With movies, however, there’s this dreadful sense of greed, pride, and ego that leaks out of even the best ones. The fact they’re made in an industry that hates it’s audience, refuses to learn, and skips paying its staff for even a fraction of all those billions of dollars that all these CEOs steal. It’s just hard to support anything that dares share its format anymore.

As for Disney, I’ve basically lost trust on them putting out a good product, regardless of what everybody else thinks. If I didn’t have a nephew, I would’ve cancelled my Disney+ subscription already. I do like that Disney is starting to become less popular again for the most part, but it’s going to take a lot for them to hit a super low point. Almost on par with the 70’s or 2000’s. Though even if they make a comeback, I doubt I’ll be excited for it.

Sorry for such a depressing post. But later, I’ll make another blog post with a bit of a rewrite of what my Disney Ranking video was going to be. It’s just going to be short summaries of my thoughts at the time. I’ll upload the whole thing here, plus individual segments on Letterboxd. All so I can get this demon off my back and bring proper closure to this never realized video.
