Yesterday, I published my old Age of Calamity review. Just as an example of what my reviews would be like. It was originally a video script, before I abandoned it, along with my drive to be a YouTube Creator. I’ll get into why later. But my point is, this post should serve as a guide for why I’m writing reviews here and how I view media.

Why not just post on social media?

Simple. Social media sucks. Twitter has a 200 character limit and prefers quick paragraphs instead of full essays. Even with threads, the audience doesn’t want the attention span for nuance and long readings.

Then there’s Tumblr, which has a very low audience after the controversial NSFW purge. Also, everything gets buried and cluttered under reblogs and retweets. It’s not a good system for showing off who you are as an individual.

This and the fact I want to improve my mental health is why I want to stay off of social media and made this website.

Okay, but what about Letterboxd or it’s game equivalent?

It is kind of on the level on social media, but not really. But, I want to stay in one place when discussing multiple mediums at once. Not just having an account to discuss a specific type of media. Also, while I do have a Letterboxd account, I’ve watched movies less and less, so I don’t really use it much. To Segway into the next part, if I ever background watched or just watch clips or half of a movie. It shouldn’t count for any review. It needs to be watched and absorbed all the way through with no interruptions.

My Rating System

This is a Five Star rating system. Which in a way is just the 10/10 rating system, but divided by two. Not only did I not want it to be confused with the USA school system of grading, but I’ve also done it for the interest of fairness. It’s to prevent perfectionism and irredeemability. By reducing fractions by 2, a 9/10 can be a 5/5, while a 2/10 will be a 1/5. 

I also don’t rate individual categories like gameplay, presentation, characters, story, or acting, and then add them up to make a final score. This is not that complicated of a mathematical solution. With that said, here is my overview of ratings.

Near perfect to perfect, barely any flaws to notice. They are my favorite, if not the best.

Exceeds the average expectations. It’s pretty solid in my book. Despite some aspects or scenes not working for me.

The very middle. Either paint by number that didn’t try enough or a half good, half bad mixed bag. In a way, all movies begin with this rating. While any moment could add or remove a star.

Despite being below average, there’s some redeeming elements and they can shine through something bad. Also, those redeeming elements have to be recurring and spread out throughout the thing. It’d have to be a good soundtrack, a likable character or two, a decent side game, good graphics, or a small combo of all these things. “So bad, it’s good” media can also qualify as two stars.

Either I felt nothing, felt something that wasn’t fun, or a mix of both. Maybe one redeeming thing that shows up for a few seconds, but you have to try to go to this level.

What to expect after this?

I’m not going to announce any specific projects, as oftentimes, they just never happen. Instead, I’m just going to keep you guessing as they come along.

At most, I’m going to release some old completed scripts or reduced versions of completed scripts, like that one Disney Ranking video script from 2021-2022.

Okay, but why don’t you make videos?

My video editing skills have always been miniscule and even editing a minute of video would take weeks. Especially since I have a day job that takes up my time and energy. It’s been growing since 2020 and refuses to slow down on me. I can’t just have two straight hours to myself at home either. 30 minutes plus has to be eaten up by dinner time with my parents. (No pun intended.) When it comes to my passions, I prefer to lock in for hours at a time. If something is interrupted without warning, the flow and focus breaks. If I’m not passionate, then work is slow.

Besides, despite what silent zeitgeist thinks. Videos are not a definitive medium. Especially when you’re not going to actually watch them. There are plenty of ways for people to speak their hearts out and this website will be my outlet for that. It’s not ideal, I wish I could edit videos frequently, but it’d have to be something that not everyone has seen before.

I’ve written journals for myself and this is like a journal that I’m sharing with all of you.
